In a total act of disgrace three NFL players took a knee as the national anthem played before the game between the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers on Sunday November 12th according to several reports.
The players in question was Eric Reed and Marquise Goodwin on San Francisco sideline and Olivier Vernon on the New York Giants sideline took knees as “The Star-Spangled Banner” played over the speakers at Levi Stadium. According to an article from the New York Daily News these three players were the only players to take a knee during Sunday’s NFL games.
All these protests started when Colin Kaepernick decided during the 2016 season to kneel during the national anthem to protest inequality in the society of America. Many players have continued the protests this season in a show of solidarity. I will agree that there is still social inequality in America protesting it on the side of a football field during the national anthem is neither the time nor place for the protest to happen. After President Trump spoke out and criticized the protesters for disrespecting the flag, the United States, and the ones who fought and some the ones who died to defend out great country at a rally in Alabama back in September, the number of players grew.
But President Trump and the fans are not the only people who are displeased with those who feel they need to kneel during the playing of our national anthem, but one has gone as far as walk out of a game because of the protest. Remember back in early October, Vice President Mike Pence were attending a game between the Indianapolis Colts and the San Francisco 49ers when the protestors kneeled during the national anthem. The vice president got up and walked out of the game. When asked why he walked out of the game, Pence explained that he “will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem. While everyone is entitled to their own opinions, I don’t think it’s too much to ask NFL players to respect the Flag and our National Anthem.”
I love the response from Vice President Pence to the protestors. But those three NFL players who took a knee during the National Anthem on Veteran’s Day weekend not only disrespected our anthem, flag, and veteran’s but they showed that they have no respect for their own selves.
