Alabama Congressman Wants DOD To End NFL Sponsorship

If the NFL thought the backlash from the players’ and other team members’ protest would quickly fade away, they were sadly mistaken.  The NFL is facing backlash from DirecTV NFL Sunday Ticket cancellation refunds to restaurants not showing games due to the protest.  Unfortunately for the NFL, they just received more bad news.

The Department of Defense pays professional sports leagues to display symbols of patriotism and to play the national anthem before all the games.  Just this year the DOD will spend nearly $600 million to advertise the U.S. military But one congressman wants to stop the federal government from subsidizing teams that does not respect the flag and anthem.

Congressman Mo Brooks, R-Alabama sent a letter to President Donald Trump where he urged executive action to discontinue payments to sports teams who condone disrespect of the nation’s symbols of freedom.

In the letter Brooks said,

“Federal law about the American flag and national anthem is clear. 4 U.S.C. § 8 states, ‘the flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing’ and adds that ‘no disrespect should be shown to the flag.   Further, 36 U.S.C. § 301 states, During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart.”

Brooks also said in his letter that a league that does not respect the laws of the country should not receive money from taxpayers.

“The National Football League (NFL) is disrespecting America’s flag and national anthem. The NFL’s conduct is not only unpatriotic and deplorable; it also conflicts with federal law.  The NFL and its players and teams assert they have a First Amendment Freedom of Speech right to disrespect America’s flag and national anthem contrary to federal law. Perhaps. But American taxpayers certainly have the right to stop their hard-earned tax dollars being used to support disrespect for America’s flag and national anthem.”

Congressman Brooks is seeking support for the letter from his House of Representatives colleagues.  I urge everyone to contact their congressman and have to support Congressman Brooks letter.
